REDUCE YOUR RISKS

EARLY DETECTION
Individuals with a cervix should always take steps to find cervical cancer early. Taking action can also help find pre-cancers, which can be treated to keep cervical cancer from starting. Those who have been diagnosed with cervical cancer or cervical pre-cancer should have follow-up testing and cervical cancer screening as recommended by their health care team. With a comprehensive approach to prevent, screen and treat, cervical cancer can be eliminated as a public health problem within a generation.

PREVENTABLE & TREATABLE
Cervical cancer is highly preventable and treatable. Reclaiming Intimacy created the Cervical Cancer Learning Center to provide information about prevention and screening along with what to expect after a diagnosis. Cervical cancer begins when healthy cells on the surface of the cervix change, grow, & form a tumor. A tumor can be cancerous or benign. A cancerous tumor is malignant, meaning it can spread to other parts of the body. A benign tumor means the tumor will not spread.

TAKE THE TEST
A Pap test, or Pap smear, is the most common test used to look for abnormal cells that can lead to cervical cancer. These abnormal cells can be cancerous, most often treatable, precancerous cellular changes, rather than cervical cancer. The cells may also be tested for human papillomavirus, or HPV. Infection with HPV is a risk factor for cervical cancer. HPV is most commonly passed from person to person during sexual activity. Some strains are more strongly linked with certain types of cancer.
